Product Description BF-31B Most wood speaker stands are low budget, low performance designs, constructed of particle board, plywood, or low grade hardwoods. Sanus Systems Basic Foundations III are the first MDF speaker supports to combine great aesthetics and stability, with high performance at a reasonable price. Each Basic Foundations III speaker stand features a black ash finish and includes rubber bump-ons and steel spike feet. Proudly made in the U.S.A. Features: Assembly Instructions

Careful Assembly yields a Great Quality Stand - Especially at this Price. August 31, 2010 James R. Davis (MI, USA) First and perhaps most importantly -- These are excellent stands for their cost. I doubt if you could build nicer stands at this inexpensive price point.
On to the observations:
1) Build Quality is great. The stands are composed of 4 particle board parts, sprayed with a nice matte-black finish. The upright posts are pre-drilled with pilot holes that are very capable of facilitating proper assembly without damage to the product. I'm convinced that other reviewers who have experienced splitting issues with the composite wood upright are not properly lining up the fasteners before tightening. It is VERY easy to make this mistake, because the fasteners are 'wood' screws that have a sharp tip that will drill into the rough ends of the upright posts. In the case that you do not carefully align the upper and lower plates with the pilot hole, you WILL split the wood and cause trouble for yourself. Here is my recommendation:
Assembly Note: Place all four screws into each the top and the bottom plate and begin to screw them through the plate BEFORE placing it onto the post. Allow about 1/8" protrusion of each of these four screws to act as guides when placing the upper (or lower) plate onto the upright. Once you have done this, continue with normal assembly -- you will notice that the screw turns smoothly with only mild turning-force on your screwdriver. Do not continue if you feel like you are biting into new, undrilled wood. Second: DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN the fasteners, snug them up and give them an extra quarter turn to solidify the build.
2) I'm using the stands with Klipsch rear speakers that are slightly larger than suggested. They are quite stable if the carpet spikes and the rubber dampener pads are used. Initially I had planned on using velcro between the speaker stand and the speaker components, but that has not proven necessary.
3) The Wire Management is not perfect -- but it is very serviceable. The stands are intended to be used with the carpet spikes -- which means that no groove would be necessary to allow the speaker wire to pass under the base of the stand. I do agree with other comments that the upper plate hole is A) Too Small to allow for good quality speaker cable (simple fix, drill it larger) B) in a useless location (directly under the base of the speaker).
Wire Management Note: The back of the stand has plastic covers that are flexible and adjustable- simply running the speaker cord from the top of these covers rather than through the upper plate seems to be an effective and mostly acceptable solution. Also of value -- fastening the wire to the inside of the speaker stand upright will provide better aesthetics when looking at the stands from the front. There is a small gap between the uprights from the front that will allow the speaker wire to poke out if you do not fasten it, or make certain it is well managed inside the stand.
Overall, I am very satisfied with these stands and they do look very attractive if your speaker components and room allow for the black colored finish.
Look good; good value August 30, 2010 mdchachi (USA) The main thing I want to caution is that the particle wood is so soft that it's very easy to screw into the wrong point, where there are no pre-drilled holes. But if you do that, the wood will likely split which is what happened to me. Fortunately it wasn't so noticeable after I took the screw out and put it in the right place. So be careful to put the screws into the pre-drilled holes.
Other than that, they are exactly what I was looking for. Inexpensive speaker stands. As others have noticed, the hole at the top is probably useless for most people but the speaker wire can be ran out the back and around to the speaker.
Sanus BF-31B Speaker Stands August 23, 2010 Craigm For the price they are worth it.
I was worried about the weight of my Polk M40 bookshelf speakers (36Lbs)Ea x 4.
The Sanus stands held the weight well and looked awsome with the large
full range 3 way speakers 2) 5 1/4" subwoofers and 1) 1" tweeters per speaker
Adequate for the price, some flaws. August 22, 2010 Sammy Squirrel (Earth, Milky Way Galaxy) As others have mentioned, the 'wood' splits very easily when being assembled; I was very careful to make sure the screws went in as straight as possible but I still experienced some light cracking at the bottom of one of the units. I plan to shoot a little wood glue into the split and clamp it, that should repair it well enough. One thing that helped a bit was to pre-tap the holes before assembling. I went in about 3/4's of the way with one of the supplied screws then backed it out. If I ever did it again I'd probably go the full length of the screw as the cracks appeared just before the screw bottomed out during final assembly. I also slid in the back covers before putting the top on instead of having to force them in later. Sanus could easily fix the cracking problem in manufacturing but evidently they don't care enough to bother, hence my 3 star review. Set your expectations accordingly and you won't be disappointed, they are otherwise fine stands for casual use.
Not bad for the price August 1, 2010 docjoc I didn't want to spend a lot on speaker stands, so my expectations were realistic. These are attractive and very functional. They are stable with my small bookshelf speakers on them. They were easy to put together. The quality is so-so. The wood cracked slightly when screwing in one of the screws. There was one short on the inserts for the gap between pieces.(got 3 instead of 4). Overall I am happy with them.
