5 out of 5 stars Works as described   September 3, 2010

Construction and overall engineering of the product is good. They hold up my large 13" bookshelf Yamaha speakers and they stay put just fine. I was careful not to over-tighten the screws to prevent splitting the MDF constructed wood but other than that they're perfect. I've had them for a little over a year and they're still holding up great!

4 out of 5 stars As good as you can do for this price   September 3, 2010

I hesitated in buying these after reading numerous reviews citing design flaws and damage during assembly. After hunting around for other options, I became convinced that these were worth a try; there simply isn't a lot of competition for something like this at this price point.

I did have the luxury of buying 2 sets at the same time; one set was going down in the basement, in my exercise area, where no one would see the results of a sloppy assembly job other than myself, and down there I would not care as long as it worked.

I did screw up a little on the first stand I assembled, succeeding in splintering the wood a little in a couple of areas that are not very visible. From this experience I learned a couple of things about the assembly process which might aid someone else buying this item, which is why I'm writing this review. The problem is not that the "pilot holes" in the 2 long support pieces (in each stand) aren't big enough or long enough. Someone in an earlier review suggested drilling these holes out more, but this is really not necessary. What IS necessary is that you need to be sure you are screwing the screws STRAIGHT DOWN, and correctly centered on the pilot holes. I found this a lot easier to do when first attaching the bottoms of the stands, than it was when the stand was already partially assembled and I was screwing in the top.

First, DO NOT USE AN ELECTRIC SCREWDRIVER. This composite wood product is very easy to screw and if you screw too fast and don't have enough control (which will happen with a power screwdriver) I can promise you that you will split the wood. The instructions make a big point about this and the instructions ARE RIGHT.

It is not very hard to get the bottom piece screwed into the two long support pieces; just be careful that you have the holes lined up right and that the screws go in straight. It will help to put the 4 screws through the bottom holes, a fraction of an inch through the other side, to allow you to line the support pieces up correctly. I'd suggest that you do not screw the bottom supports in all the way; leave an eight of an inch of slack in there which will aid you in getting the top panel attached without splitting the wood in the supports at the top. Thread the 4 screws with your fingers through the top panel (the entry side is on the side where the recessed holes have been drilled out, to accommodate the screw heads when the thing is fully tightened up). Once you have a fraction of an inch of the 4 screws coming through the top, carefully put the top on the supports (already attached to the base but not fully tightened down), then be sure that everything lines up, with the screws entering the tiny pilot holes, before you screw further. You cannot have too much light when you are doing this; work in a well lighted area so you can see screws entering the predrilled holes. Screw the screws in very slowly and be very careful about the screws going in at an angle. If this starts to happen, take the screw back out and be sure that you have threaded through the predrilled holes in the supports. Since this wood is so soft, it is very easy to just screw through another part of the support, not through the predrilled hole, and the result is guaranteed to be a split in the wood. Once you have the top on tightly you can invert the stand and fully tighten the 4 screws attached to the bottom. Voila!

I found the little hole drilled in the top for the wires to be too tiny and I drilled it out to permit my thicker speaker wires to go through. The speaker is not going to sit flat on the platform, with the wire coming through, unless you apply the little rubber feet to the bottom of the speaker. Those rubber feet would have come packaged with your speakers, not with the stands.

As to the spikes, I do not have them sitting on carpet, however since these stands are not in a place where the stand could easily be bumped, I think it is fine to put it on a hard surface such as a wood floor. If the stands are out of the traffic pattern, which they should be, they will not be bumped, will not move, and hence will not damage a wood floor or other surface, nor will they be knocked over. I don't think that these stands would be all that stable without the spikes in place, if the speaker stands are put in a bad place, so use some judgment on where you put these.

For the price, these stands, although not fine furniture, are probably impossible to beat.

Look reasonable.

However, they are made out of worthless MDF, NOT real wood, which split on both stands as I was putting them together.

MDF should be banned from furniture manufacture

4 out of 5 stars Very nice   August 28, 2010

I was a little concerned about all the reviews with the material splitting, but I only had a minor problem with that and nothing that effects the functionality and looks.

These stands are really nice. They look like much more expensive stands. Work great and solid.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful accent for any home theater   August 27, 2010

Well, assembly was a sinch, and the look is phenomenal. Not much needs to be said, pretty basic item that serves its purpose, quite well at that.

The only thing I will recommend to all buyers is to MAKE SURE THE HOLES ARE LINED UP BEFORE SCREWING THE SCREWS IN, if you don't, you will screw through and CRACK the foundation of the stands.

Once assembled, you will LOVE these in ANY size you purchase.
